Trudy,

It depends on what you mean by pure. Pure jade is white and is why the Chinese valued it so highly. Red jade, on the other hand, is technically dyed; in one of two ways.

Some jade is dyed naturally. Jade in soil with a high iron content will absorb the iron. This can turn it red, orange, yellow, or a combination there of.

Some jade is dyed by humans. This usually gives it a uniform red color.

It is hard to tell the difference if you do not know your jade, so you should always purchase all jade from reputable dealers.

For more information on red jade see our Big Sur Jade page. Scroll down to vulcan jade, this is our areas natural red nephrite jade.

We do have some red vulcan jade (high quality Big Sur nephrite jade) in stock which is not on our website. If you, or anyone else, is interested we will add some to the site.

Is there such a thing as pure red jade, or is most of what people call red jade actually agate. All of the "red jade" jewelry I have found has been dyed.

Thanks for any info you can give me.
